For more than 130 years, Homewood Health Centre has been a cornerstone of mental health and addiction treatment for thousands of Canadians. Homewood’s Addiction Medicine Service (AMS) provides treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of AMS. To celebrate this event, AMS, in collaboration with Homewood Research Institute, is hosting a symposium to foster discussion on addiction treatment.
On October 29, 2015 leading Canadian practitioners and researchers in addiction will spend a full day of conversation together with the aim to work together to plan, conduct and, as appropriate, act on studies that advance addiction treatment.
Presentations will be made by Dr. Jean Costello (HRI, Research and Evaluation Scientist) who will describe the recovery-monitoring system within the Addiction Medicine Service, which measures outcomes of patients for up to one year following discharge. Dr. James MacKillop (Homewood, Senior Scientist) will describe how Homewood and HRI are developing research integrated with clinical practice in ways that advance evidence-based enhancements to programming. Guest Dr. Andrew Mendenhall, Medical Director of Hazeldon, Oregon, will describe the science and spirituality behind integrating medication assisted treatment and 12-step recovery.
